The PWD Department of the Delhi Government responsible for the death of a man

Ø    The PWD Department of the Delhi Government responsible for the death of a man on the Mehrauli-Mahipalpur Road on 30 July, 2016 when he fell into a pothole and a vehicle  ran over him---Ajay Maken.

Ø    The PWD department of the Delhi government has completed only 30 per cent of the desilting work by July 5, which is a criminal act of negligence and corruption by the Delhi government, as this work should have been completed by June 15, before the onset of the Monsoon on June 29.

Ø    On the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee WhatsApp Mobile No 98916 20771 ,  #JaagoYaBhaago campaign will be launched in which people can WhatsApp photos of potholes with the name of the road/gali, name of the Assembly/Ward  and name of the sender.

NEW DELHI, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Shri Ajay Maken said it was due to the criminal act of negligence and corruption by the PWD department of the AAP Government in  Delhi  that  resulted in the death of a man from Uttam Nagar on the Mehrauli-Mahipalpur Road on 30 July as after falling into a pothole, he was ran over by a vehicle. He said had the desilting works been carried out before the onset of monsoon, such an accident could have been averted.  Shri Maken said it was shocking to find out that the PWD Department had carried out only 30 per cent desilting of the drains by July 5 when all desilting works should have been completed by June 15.

Addressing a press conference at the DPCC office, Rajiv Bhawan here today, Shri Ajay Maken said according to the data available on the   Delhi Government website,  it was shocking to note that only 30 per cent of desilting had been carried out upto July 5, 2016 out of the 1014 roads under the PWD department. He said  out of the 256 roads in South Delhi under the PWD department, desilting was carried out only on 9 roads, which was just 3.5 per cent. He said in North East Delhi, out of the 317 roads under the control of the PWD department, desilting works were completed only on 35 roads  and in North Delhi, out of the total number of 432 roads under PWD, desilting was done only on 267 roads by July 5.

Shri Maken, quoting a report in a national newspaper dated 18 June, 2015, said last year too, the AAP Government in Delhi had failed to fully carry out the desilting works by 15th June, but the AAP Government does not seem to have learnt any lesson from last year’s experience. He said this year  desilting works were carried out only on fewer  number of roads because of which the roads get water-logged even after light rains, resulting in huge potholes.

Shri Maken said this year too, contract for the  desilting work was given by March, but despite that even till July 5, the works have not been completed, which is a clear indication that the Delhi government has been squandering the hard-earned money of the people of Delhi.  He said deadline for completing the desilting work has been kept at June 15 as it takes time for the desilted garbage to dry up before it is cleared from the roads before the onset of monsoon in the Capital on June 29. He said if the desilted garbage is not cleared before the monsoon  rains arrive, then it   will flow back into the drains when it rains come calling. Shri Maken  said  that was the reason, during the Congress regime, the desilting works used to be completed much before the monsoon rains.

Shri Maken said that the DPCC will launch #JaagoYaBhaago campaign on WhatsApp No 9891620771 against the Delhi Government and the BJP-ruled MCDs whereby photographs of potholes on roads would be called with the details of the name of the road/gali, name of the Assembly/Ward along with the name of the sender. He said the Congress will pressurize the AAP
Government in Delhi and the BJP-ruled MCDs to immediately fill these potholes on the roads.

Shri Maken sought an inquiry  why was the desilting of the roads, which falls under the Delhi Government, could not be completed by 15th June and action be taken against the guilty officials so that a lasting solution could be found to this recurring problem in future too.
