Self Defence Program Organized by SPUWAC
The Special Police Unit for Women and Children
(SPUWAC) earlier known as Crime Women Cell,
was set up in 2009 to give more
sympathetic response to women and children complaints on priority
basis. Further to empower women through exposure (demonstration) and
training in techniques of Martial Arts, Self-defense training was started in
the year-2002 by this unit. During the Self Defence training the
participants are also being trained how to make use of things like Dupatta, Pen
& Handbags to protect themselves from attacks by anti social elements,
chain or bag snatching, criminal assault etc. The training helps in
building up the self esteem of students/women so that they do not feel
vulnerable & humiliated.
Since
2002 till date total 1057 self defence training programmes have
been conducted by SPUWAC, Nanakpura and total 1,39,509
participants i.e. school/college girls students, housewives
and girls in educational institutions across the NCT of Delhi have been trained
in basic self-defense techniques. During the year 2014, 145 programmes
were conducted by SPUWAC, Nanakpura and 17699 participants
trained. In the year 2015, 17,253 participants have been trained in
65 programmes till date. Apart from it 233 one day workshops
have also been organized so far which have been attended by 38095
girls/women.
To
further enhance capacity building of the trainers of Delhi Police we are

In
order to further streamline the self defence training, keeping in view the
enthusiastic response from participants and to channelize their enthusiasm
further, it was felt, that a manual on self defence, with lucid demonstrative
photos and instructions is urgently required. Therefore, Self
Defence Manual/CD has been brought out for the participants who, after attending
the course, may revert back to this manual for self training at their
respective places/homes and convenience. These self-defence skills enumerated
through different assault situations and practised regularly can save them from
any kind of assault.
