Brave Girls Awarded on This I-Day at Delhi

On the occasion of Independence Day of our country i.e. on 15.08.2015, five girls from
Central District and seven girls from North District who have shown exemplary courage and bravery and had helped the police of Central District and North District respectively in catching the thieves, eve-teasers etc. have been duly awarded by the Commissioner of Police, Delhi.

Women’s safety has always been a matter of concern for security agencies. Recent turn of events have brought the subject of women’s safety to the forefront. In the recent times, in order to instill a sense of safety and security amongst the girls, many self defense programmes have been organized by the Central District Police. To begin with the Girls schools and colleges were targeted to impart self defense training and a crash course of 15 days was chalked out to train the girls in self defence. The programme got a remarkable response from the students and accordingly, the co-education schools were also included. The Principals/ teachers and the students responded to it. As a result we have been successful in training most of the students of Central District and North District and the programme is still continued.

Also, an operation ‘SHISTACHAR’ has also been launched in the area of Central District and North District under the able guidance of Sh. S.K. Gautam, Jt. CP/Central Range, Delhi. The lady police officers are deployed in civvies at crowded roads and market places. The eve-teasers are being caught and they are being counseled by the religious leaders as well as by their parents. The operation has been started to wean the youth away from the menace of eve-teasing and teach them about the respect of women. The operation has also helped girls in gaining confidence and face the eve-teasers with iron hand.  The main advantages of this initiative are to make women feel empowered and safe and to increase public confidence in police.

Both the operations of self defence and ‘SHISTACHAR’ have proved to be good
success and it helped in building confidence amongst the girls. Efforts were made to impart necessary knolledge to the girls for creating awareness so that it can be imbibed into their attitude, for attitudinal change is the undercurrent for behavioural change.  As a result, they have not only ensured their security but have also helped in apprehending many criminals. In order to motivate more and more girls to get face to face the criminals, five girls from Central District and seven girls from North District have been rewarded by calling them at the flag hoisting ceremony at Police Headquarters, ITO, New Delhi. They have been issued Commendation Rolls along with Cash Rewards.  The purpose of operation ‘SHISHTACHAR’ and ‘SELF DEFENCE’ was very well served as through these operations, Delhi Police could inspire these brave girls to remain attentive and ensure their own safety on roads, public transport etc.
