Operation Mobile Hunt
With the recovery of a total of 406 mobile phones in two months, the team of Central Range, Delhi has successfully executed the operation Mobile Hunt ( the search of stolen/ lost / robbed mobile phones).
India today ranks second among the top countries for smart-phone users with an estimated 960 million mobile phones existing in the country as per the TRAI press release dated 10 April 2015. Mobile phones have become a valuable belonging (photographs, contacts, passwords etc) to almost everyone.
A serious note was taken by Sh. Sunil Kumar Gautam, Joint Commissioner of Police, Central Range, Delhi who motivated the officers of the range to start Operation Mobile Hunt, a campaign of tracking the lost/ stolen mobile phones using all sort of technology (primarily better record keeping) and that maximum number of mobiles be traced in a time span of 2 months starting from May 1, 2015.
Strategy was chalked out wherein Sh Parmaditya, DCP/ Central District and Sh Madhur Verma, DCP/North District personally briefed the Mobile Tracing Cell teams of the districts (Central District team headed by Inspr. Satender Mohan ( I/C Special Staff), SI Pramod Anand, HC Parkash 489/C, Ct Joginder 1557/C and Ct Shankar 1499/C and North Distt team headed by Insp. Ashok Kumar and members as SI Yashender, ASI Ajeet, HC Jakeer, HC Mahesh, HC Khushal Singh, HC Satish Patil, Ct. Devender, Ct. Amit Sharma) to persistently keep the stolen/lost/robbed mobile phones on tracking and as and when any mobile is traced out, activate the local police station teams to recover the same. ACsP were tasked to use human intelligence while verifying the criminals with similar past records and also to coordinate and send joint teams for recovery from far flung and sensitive areas ( from states of West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and North East India). It was learned that most of the stolen phones find their way in the grey market where retailers offer them to prospective customers at a discounted price. Initially, while the retailers manage to change all other traces of a phone being stolen, they could never tamper with the IMEI. But now the technologies of tempering with the IMEI have entered the grey market.
In the process, various mobile phones lost/ stolen, as reported in Central Range, Delhi were located from different parts of the country and in this regards, teams were sent to recover the same. A Gang of mobile statchers/thieves was busted who used to change IMEI using IMEI changing jacks and a recovery of 32 mobiles and 2 laptops was made along with the IMEI changing hardwares. After around two months, the following is the statistic of the success achieved (as per sub divisions):
