Imposter IPS Officer Arrested; an Academic Who Became a Cheat to Realize His Dream Unfulfilled

A team of Special Cell led by Inspectors Rahul Sawhney and Sanjay Kumar has arrested a cheat who impersonated as an IPS officer to cheat several persons in Delhi.



On 23/02/2015,one Kultar Singh,s/o Late Raj Singh, r/o F-10, Gali No.2, Krishna Park, Tilak Nagar,
New Delhi who runs a shop dealing with sale purchase of mobile phones in Gaffar Market of Karolbagh, Delhi made a complaint stating therein that a person in the name of ‘Satheesh Nair’ who had introduced himself as an IPS officer of Jaipur, Rajasthan, had come to his shop on 30/01/2015 and had purchased two mobile phones in exchange of two old phones by paying an amount of money. During the course of interaction,Satheesh Nair had shown his Identity Card to this complainant to convince him that he was an IPS officer presently posted in Jaipur, Rajasthan and was expecting his next posting in Delhi. In their next meeting, the imposter induced the complainant in parting with two more mobile phones and Rupees One Lakh in cash on the pretext that the ATM card of the imposter was somehow not working. In good faith that the imposter was a genuine IPS officer and so was the pretext, the complainant had obliged him. Subsequently, when this imposter visited Delhi again, the complainant met him at Hotel Rama, Karolbagh, Delhi where the imposter was found wearing a Police uniform who, as stated, was about to go for an important meeting at Delhi Police HQ regarding his posting in Delhi.The unsuspecting complainant maintained telephonic communication with the imposter but during the course of time, he started getting suspicious of the true identity of the imposter. The complainant checked the list of IPS officers on internet but could not find any person in the name of Satheesh Nair. By the time this reality had dawned upon the complainant, he had already been cheated to the tune of Rs. 1,65,000/- by the imposter IPS officer.


On 24/02/15,based upon the inputs received from the complainant, the team of Special Cell apprehended the imposter IPS officer from Karol Bagh while he was going to Hotel Rama in a car bearing number RJ-14-CB-9826. A uniform having the badges/rank of IPS was found hanging in his car which was recovered along with cap, belt, shoes and one wireless set. Some passport size photographs in uniform were also recovered from the purse being carried by the imposter. A laptop was also recovered from his car. Photographs of some other police officers were also found stored in his mobile phone. Accordingly, a case u/ss. 170/171/419/420 IPC has been registered at PS Special Cell and investigation has been taken up. Efforts are being made to identify other victims of this imposter IPS officer.


Accused Satheesh Nair was born in 1971 at Pathnatata Villa, City Ernakulam, PS Kadovanthara, District Kochi, Kerala. His father was working in a pharmaceutical company as a marketing executive. He did his B.Tech from Bhartiya University, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, and followed this with M.Tech and Ph.D in Computer Science from Anna University, Chennai. After obtaining his doctorate, he worked as Assistant Professor in Sri Jayaram Engineering College, Hyderabad and worked as a Senior Reader at Madanapalle Institute of Technology in Orissa. In February 2014, he met an accident which resulted in fracture of teeth and nose. This accident had confined him to bed for over 5 months and he lost his job. Accused had an old and insatiable quirk to become an IPS officer and he utilized this as an opportunity to become an imposter for earning easy money. He got stitched a uniform of IPS from Geetanjali Tailor, Jaipur and started influencing people to cheat them with his position.

Efforts are being made to identify and contact other victims of this imposter IPS officer.
